The NUS Singapore Prize 2022

The NUS Singapore Prize is an annual literary award given by the National University of Singapore (NUS) to authors who have produced work that is deemed by a panel of judges to be the most outstanding book on Singapore history published in the previous three years. The award is sponsored by the NUS Graduate School and awarded by a Prize Committee consisting of five eminent scholars in the field of Singapore history. In addition to the top prize, there are also subsidiary awards for different categories of books.

The prize will be presented during the NUS Singapore International Graduate Awards ceremony in November 2022 at NUS Centre for the Arts. The winner will receive a cash prize of S$30,000, a citation and a medallion. The winner’s work will be displayed at the NUS Museum for a year. The award is a part of the NUS International Graduate Awards programme, which seeks to attract talented students from all over the world to NUS and to strengthen Singapore’s position as a global hub for research and innovation.

Unlike other forms of gambling, such as lotteries or sports betting, prize promotions are specifically excluded from gambling regulations in Singapore. This is because the contest or promotion does not provoke in participants a psychological pressure to buy the promoted product(s) or service(s).

It is not easy for athletes to reach the peak of their career and win a medal at an Olympic Games. Athletes need a substantial financial investment over many years to train at elite level. In order to encourage athletes, the Singapore National Olympic Council created an incentive scheme to reward athletes who win medals at major international sporting events. The Major Games Award Programme provides cash awards to athletes who win medals at the Olympic, Asian, Commonwealth and South East Asian (SEA) Games.

Professor Kishore Mahbubani, senior advisor (university and global relations) at NUS, said there are plans to expand the type of works that qualify for the Singapore Prize. He cited the movie 12 Years a Slave as an example, saying that history can sometimes be told more effectively through fiction and other formats. He added that the goal is to ensure that all Singaporeans develop a deeper understanding of their history. The Singapore Prize is one of the most prestigious writing awards in Asia.
