Focus on modern technology –

The multiple roles that modern technology plays in increasing food production, processing and packaging cannot be underestimated. For example, using modern technology to improve processing and packaging can improve shelf life and food safety. The use of machinery in the food industry also guarantees quality and accessibility. The use of machinery reduces the cost of keeping fresh food and increases productivity.

Likewise, modern technology such as the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, modern agricultural machinery and artificial selection have been used to increase food production. The development and use of chemical fertilizers on agricultural land increases nutrient levels in the soil, thereby increasing crop yields.

When it comes to food processing, modern technology is helping food manufacturers produce more efficiently for an ever-expanding global population. When it comes to food, technology isn’t always the first thing that comes to mind. However, technology over the years has changed the way we produce and find our food through apps, robotics, data and processing techniques.

According to a recent ING report, technology is helping food manufacturers produce more efficiently for a growing world population. There are 7.5 billion people in the world right now and that means higher demand for food every year. By using technology to improve processing and packaging, it can improve the shelf life and safety of food. According to Nicole Martin writing for www.forbes.com, these are the machines to consider.

Robotics and machinery

The use of machinery in the food industry also guarantees quality and accessibility. The use of machinery reduces the cost of keeping fresh food and increases productivity. Robotic machines can help eliminate safety concerns for the most dangerous jobs in the food industry. In 2016, a technology company rolled out a program for butchery. By using robots to cut the toughest meats, they can prevent many workplace injuries. This is just one of the many ways technology can improve the industry.

3D printing

Over the past few years, 3D printing has really taken off in many industries and the food industry is one of them. There have been several NASA food 3D printing applications printing soft food creation pizza for those who cannot chew hard foods. It opens the door to innovation by being able to create a lot of things that we weren’t able to do before while also being able to contribute to food sustainability. There are many ways 3D printing is disrupting the industry.

Drone

Precision agriculture is a big player when it comes to how technology can make a difference. It is the use of GPS tracking systems and satellite imagery to monitor crop yields, soil levels and weather conditions to increase farm efficiency. Not only can they see everything that’s happening in the fields, but they can also use the analysis of the results to test the soil and the health of the crops.

Packaging and Waste

One of the biggest concerns of consumers right now is to have healthy and sustainable products. Consumers pay attention to harmful labels and ingredients, especially with social media there is not much left for companies to get away with. Many businesses are using technology to help them “go green.” By using robotics and digitalization, companies in the food industry are able to find alternatives to environmentally harmful plastics and other packaging.

Consumers are also researching where companies source their products and how they manage their waste. Currently, 40% of American food is thrown away every year. With the help of technology, progress is being made to reduce this number and utilize the extra food.

An app, Copia uses its extensive food waste reduction dashboard to connect businesses with surplus food to local shelters, after-school programs, and other nonprofits. Copia’s analysis software manages and tracks their excess to save money and reduce their overall food waste.
