Top 10 tech trends we should be ready for now
Bernard Marr* predicts some of the technological advancements that will affect our lives, both at work and at home, over the coming months.
As a futurist, Each year, I look to the future and predict the key technology trends that will shape the coming months.
There are so many innovations and breakthroughs underway right now, and I can’t wait to see how they will help transform business and society in 2022.
Let’s take a look at my list of top tech trends that everyone should be ready for, starting today.
Computing power will continue to explode in 2022.
We now have a much better cloud infrastructure and many companies are repositioning themselves on the cloud.
We’re also seeing a push towards better networks – 5G is rolling out and 6G is on the horizon.
That means even more power in our phones, in our cars and in our portable devices.
The increasing power of computers allows us to create smarter devices.
We now have smart TVs, self-driving cars, and smarter robots that can work alongside humans to accomplish more tasks.
In 2022, we will see continued momentum for this explosion of smart devices, including the introduction of smart home robots.
The trend of quantum computing – the processing of information by special quantum states – allows machines to manage information in a fundamentally different way from traditional computers.
Quantum computing will potentially give us a trillion times more computing power than we get from today’s advanced supercomputers.
I predict that in 2022, quantum computers could fundamentally change the way we approach issues such as logistics, portfolio management, and pharmaceutical innovations.
Data is a key enabler for all of these trends.
All the digitization in our world today means that we have huge amounts of data available, and data has now become the number one business asset for every organization.
We can use the data to better understand our customers, research key trends, and gain insight into what is working within our organizations.
Artificial intelligence and machine learning
Organizations and researchers are now using their data and computing power to deliver advanced AI capabilities to the world.
One of the main trends in the world of AI is computer vision. We now have computers that can see and recognize objects in video or photography.
Language processing is also making great strides, so machines can understand our voices and respond to us.
Low-code or no-code will also be a big trend this year.
We will be able to build our AI using drag-and-drop GUIs, so we can develop amazing applications without being limited by our coding skills.
We now have more augmented reality capabilities on our devices (especially our phones and tablets), and we’re seeing an even bigger push towards virtual reality (VR).
In 2022, we will see new, lighter and more portable VR devices.
Instead of having clunky headsets that require Wi-Fi connections, we’ll have more goggle-like devices that connect to our phones and give us superior VR experiences on the go.
These advances in extended reality pave the way for incredible experiences in the Metaverse, a persistent, shared virtual world that users can access across different devices and platforms.
Blockchain technology, distributed ledgers, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are transforming our world, and we will continue to see advancements in this technology in 2022.
These innovations go beyond Bitcoin and relate to things like smart contracts that allow us to verify ownership with NFTs.
This year we will see more companies and individuals enhancing physical objects with blockchain technology and tokens.
We can now make things with 3D printing that we never would have dreamed of ten years ago.
In 2022, we will see transformations in manufacturing and beyond.
This will include 3D printing technology innovations, including mass-produced custom parts, concrete for homes, printed food, metal and composite materials.
The 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to two scientists, Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer A. Doudna, for their work developing a method for genome editing.
Genomics, gene editing, and synthetic biology are the top trends as these advances can help us modify crops, cure and eradicate diseases, and develop new vaccines like the COVID-19 vaccine.
Nanotechnology will also allow us to give new attributes to materials by manipulating them at a subatomic level.
We can create things like foldable screens, better batteries, water-repellent, self-cleaning fabrics, and even self-healing paint.
New energy solutions
The last extremely important trend is that of new energy solutions.
As we tackle climate change, we will see continued advancements in the batteries we use in our cars, as well as innovations in nuclear power and green hydrogen.
These new trends will enable us to power our boats, our planes, our trains and to produce energy for the general public.
