Digital fabrication between research and practice

Additive construction and on-site complexity in off-site preparation

Webinar by Insight Architecture in collaboration with Swissnex in Brazil

Live on Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. (US / EST), 2:00 p.m. (Brazil / BRT), 7:00 p.m. (Europe / CET)

In the face of increasing urbanization around the world and our limited resources, we must find new ways of designing and manufacturing buildings. Digitization and automation, which are still in their infancy in architecture and construction, must play a key role in this area. The Digital Building Technologies research group is studying how to create a more sustainable and diverse built environment through the combination of computer-aided design methods and digital manufacturing processes such as large-format 3D printing. This webinar will focus on the possibilities of additive manufacturing in concrete construction. Several strategies will be presented in which 3D printing can not only help to use concrete more efficiently but also to manufacture complex and custom designs. Finally, the webinar will present a vision of a radically digitized process from design to manufacturing in architecture towards a digital building culture.

How to get out of the complexity of the site? Design to production is based on the simple fact that the architecture is made up of parts that must be assembled on site in a controlled and safe manner. Digital manufacturing has not only changed the way we create these parts, but also the way we create their connections, allowing a lot of on-site complexity to be incorporated into off-site prefabrication.

To explore these topics, Insight Architecture and Swissnex Brazil invite Fabian Scheurer (Switzerland), founder of Design-to-Production, and Benjamin Dillenburger (Germany), professor at ETH Zurich, ETH Zurich, to this webinar. They will present their work and discuss the challenges and opportunities they see in digital fabrication between research and practice. Cheryl Jacobs (USA), President of AIA Miami will lead the conversation.

The event will be held in English and Portuguese, with simultaneous translation in both languages. The webinar is part of Insight Architecture’s Future Now event as part of the 27th UIA 2021 Rio World Architects Congress.
