MASK Architects designs self-sustaining 3D printed steel structures
MASK Architects has unveiled a new concept of 3D printed modular steel structures, named “The Madre Natura”, which will be placed near the Nivola Museum in Sardinia. In order to erect these small modular homes, the studio would have to rely on MX3D’s Wire Arc (WAAM) additive manufacturing technology. The construction system used is called EXOSTEEL which supports and distributes the functional elements of buildings, like an exoskeleton. Each 3-story structure would be self-sufficient and could also provide energy resources.
MASK Architects is based on the idea that its work should be accessible to everyone and that art can bring communities together. It follows the same philosophy as the Nivola Museum in Orani – the project website states, “We want the city of Orani to become an iconic monument in which it can be admired from a distance as well as inside the city by all as a vision of art and monuments. We would like to see some resemblance to Mother Nature in our project. We would closely combine our conception into the natural conception of this world. We aim to blend the mother figure, which is a vital pivot point in human society, and how a foster mother takes care of her children and how the world takes care of us. Using today’s technology and features, we aim to embrace nature like a mom and protect nature like a mother protecting her children. This is why the studio imagined these astonishing structures made of a steel column printed in 3D.
He was inspired by the sculpture “La Madre” by Nivola to imagine this slender three-story shape. It is a 3D printed steel pillar that supports the structure and acts as a kind of energy tower. Each is autonomous and able to withstand all weather conditions. They are all recessed: this shape is intended to guide strong winds through each building to a common wind turbine. The latter provides the energy necessary for the different houses. Each tower is covered with solar panels; it also incorporates cameras and fire detectors.
MASK Architects declares on its website, “Our goal is not only to create livable social modules, but also to be social spaces where people can socialize and use the space however they want. The modules are expandable, flexible and adaptable to all situations. The “A1” ground floor will be designed for accommodation only. The first floor, 1.5 meters above the ground, will contain a workspace, a private shower area and storage space. The 3.5 meter high ceiling will give a feeling of very open space while the interior will be designed to be organic and natural, in the architectural style of Sardinia.
What interests us in particular is obviously the use of additive manufacturing to design certain parts of houses. Details are still scarce, but we know that the studio will work with MX3D, which has developed a robotic 3D printing solution based on the deposition of matter under concentrated energy. The company is expected to 3D print some steel framing pieces, including the main column of each house, which acts as a kind of backbone, connecting the various support beams.
