hk prize is a hong kong awards program that recognizes and honors scientists who have made outstanding contributions in the fields of artificial intelligence and robotics, life science and medicine, new materials and energy, and advanced manufacturing. It is hosted by Hong Kong Alliance of Technology and Innovation and sponsored by Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited.
The prize celebrates scientific achievements by rewarding the winners and sowing the seeds of scientific spirit, insatiable curiosity, and resolute perseverance in the next generation of scientists. It aims to boost the local scientific research landscape and help make Hong Kong a global science and technology innovation hub by attracting world-class scientific talent and supporting forward-looking research.
This year, the HK prize celebrates the achievements of five science prize laureates: 2016 Life Science and Medicine Prize Laureate Professor Dennis Yuk Ming Lo, 2019 Astronomy Prize Laureates Shrinivas R Kulkarni and Swee Lay Thein, 2021 Mathematical Sciences Prize Laureate Mok Ngai-ming, and 2022 Physical Science Prize Laureate Luk Kam-biu. Each of them has shaped the future by their remarkable discoveries. They are among the many Hong Kong science and technology pioneers whose work has benefited people around the world.
Yang Heng’s fantasy drama Silent Ghosts won the Works-in-Progress award at this week’s virtual Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF, March 14-16). It follows a pair of primary school friends who travel into the future, where one finds the other dead. It was chosen from 15 projects presented at this year’s event, which was held online due to pandemic restrictions. The award came with a cash prize of $12,800.
In addition, a feature film, This Is Hong Kong, won the Best Hong Kong Feature Film award at this weekend’s Hong Kong International Film Festival. It is the first time that a film from mainland China has won this top prize, which is voted by the festival’s international jury. The film was directed by Huang Ningwei and produced by veteran producer Stephen Lam for Production Avenue.
The Hong Kong Film Awards is open to all films that meet the following criteria: the film director is a Hong Kong resident or company, at least one of the film companies is registered in Hong Kong, and the film was commercially released in Hong Kong within the previous calendar year. The winner will receive a certificate and a trophy. In addition, the winning movie will be entered into the HK Oscars in the category of Best Foreign Film. It will compete against all other Hong Kong-made films for the best film in the Asia-Pacific region. The HK Film Awards is now in its 37th edition. The HK Film Awards is supported by the Hong Kong Arts Council and the Hong Kong Tourism Board. This is the only Asian film competition recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). The winners will be announced in April 2019.
