However, despite the popularity of these hotels’ swimming pools, there are some issues plaguing their operation. One of these issues is a shortage of lifeguards. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) has been cutting the workforce since 2004 and the lifeguards’ union has gone on strike several times.
HK’s coronavirus outbreak has forced many public and private pools to shut down for the time being. Sadly, this has affected the country’s swimmers, especially elite swimmers, who are trained at these swimming pools. It is estimated that more than 20 public swimming pools and some 500 licensed private swimming pools will not open as scheduled this month due to a lack of lifeguards.
Despite the challenges, many of Hong Kong’s beautiful and unique pool locations are still available for swimmers to enjoy. Some have even been restored and reopened to cater for the needs of tourists. Hopefully, the situation will improve as summer approaches and more swimming pools in Hong Kong will be ready to welcome swimmers from all over the world.
